New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown shared that he received congratulations from NBA coaching icons following the franchise's historic 2026 championship victory. The Knicks capped their title run with a dominant 130-93 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers on May 26, part of a 4-1 series triumph. Brown's media session highlighted the respect he earned from peers who helped shape his career.
Brown named several coaching legends who sent messages. Gregg Popovich, Steve Kerr, Bernie Bickerstaff, and Rick Carlisle all reached out with congratulations. Several former players Brown worked with also contacted him. He described it as special to hear from mentors who "raised him" in the NBA coaching community.
Brown noted the unique relationships in what he called a close club. Coaches compete fiercely all season but often root for each other's success when not facing off. For those established figures to acknowledge his entry into the championship circle meant a great deal to him personally.
Steve Kerr's congratulations carried a different weight. Brown didn't learn under Kerr. Instead, he served as Kerr's assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors from 2016 to 2022. That role was instrumental in Brown's return to a head coaching position.
Kerr provided key opportunities. Brown stepped in as interim head coach during the 2017 NBA playoffs when Kerr dealt with chronic back pain. He did so again during the 2022 Western Conference Finals when Kerr had COVID-19. Those stints rebuilt Brown's coaching resume, leading directly to his jobs with the Sacramento Kings and, the champion Knicks.
The championship momentum has carried into the new season.
